Should Americans keep beating themselves up about our past mistakes?

Imperialism, slavery, and witch hunts were all the wrong things to do, but we turned away from these mistakes. Can we now try to forgive and forget? Should we continue to judge our past by 21st. century standards? Weren't most countries in the past guilty of as many , or more mistakes? ---Weren't all the world's people born into an imperfect world?
