Who Wrote the Bible, Were the Apostles or Not?

While watching the History Channel I came across a show about the Bible. The show was about who wrote the Bible? They mentioned that back in those days people were illiterate; therefore, they could not write the bible as we believe. What do you think? (Please no Jokes) I do not want to sound disrespectful, I believe there is a higher being, but now I have doubts whether it was written by apostles or not?
