Question about proposition 8?

Well I'm from California and I voted NO on proposition 8 but since I it appears that it isn't going to p I was wondering if it is ped, will the gay people who were married beforehand still be acknowledged and still be validly married, or will they not be married and have to get a civil union? Or does it only start being applied to gay couples seeking a marriage? It would really be a tragedy because I know the loveliest gay married couple. Thanks to anyone who can clarify.
