Can shortness of breath cause brain damage in newborns?

My daughter somehow manages to get stuck in the sheets and the crib where her face gets somewhat smothered. I've since gotten rid of the blankets and fleeces due to this. My question is can shortness of breath especially when crying cause brain damage or head trauma?
