What's the difference between kung foo and karate?

Kung Fu has many styles in the 100's and i have heard they are mainly based on animals movements. Preying Mantis, Monkey Style, Tiger Style etc etc and have heard that it is generally a Chinese Martial Art and most of the styles are Soft Martial Arts. Karate is more of Japanese/ Okinawan Martial Art and is more dircect striking and not based on animal movements and is considered more harder style martial art than Kung Fu and has no as many styles.
